The level of competition at the 1A tri-district track meet was tough this year – just ask Coupeville’s Makana Stone.
Stone tied her school record (26.74) in the 200 meters but placed seventh in the tri-district finals Saturday, May 24, at King’s.
She broke her Coupeville High School 400 mark, running a 58.13, but that was only good enough for third place. She did, however, secure a state berth by placing in the top five.
Stone has whittled time off the school 400 standard all season. In mid-April, she first broke Amy Mouw’s 2003 record of 60.44 and has lowered it almost every meet since.
Even though her new record is the best in Coupeville history by two seconds, it was only good enough for third in the talent-laden 400 at tri-district. The top four finishers posted the state’s four best 1A times in the event this year.
Nick Streubel, shaking off the rust after missing several weeks with an illness, placed eighth in the boys shot put with a 45-04.75. Skyler Lawrence finished 13th in the girls shot put (28-08).
Jared Helmstadter was 12th in the 400 (55.61) and Matt Shank was 16th in the high jump (5).
Stone will travel to Eastern Washington University in Cheney Friday and Saturday, May 30 and 31, for the state 1A champion meet.
