Panthers take 2 from ’Cats / Baseball

The Snohomish High School baseball team completed a two-game sweep of Oak Harbor by defeating the host Wildcats 7-1 Wednesday, April 25.

The Panthers (9-5, 10-6) stopped the Wildcats 12-4 in Snohomish Tuesday.

Oak Harbor (3-13, 3-14) finishes its season with a home game against Lynnwood (5-9, 5-12) at 4 p.m. Friday, April 27.

Both teams had nine hits, but it was all about the errors — the Wildcats committed nine and the Panthers six.

Snohomish, which scored three runs in four different innings, took advantage of Oak Harbor miscues to score 11 unearned runs.

After giving up three runs in the second inning, Oak Harbor scored a run in the third and three more in the fourth to go up 4-3.

An error and singles by Chase Ogden, James Besaw and Caleb Fitzgerald led to Oak Harbor’s run in the third.

In the fourth, Austin Boesch drove in one run with a base hit and Fitzgerald plated two with a single.

From that point, Snohomish pulled away with three runs in each of the next three innings.

Jack Lovendale was the tough-luck losing pitcher; all six runs he surrendered were unearned.

Fitzgerald finished with two hits and two RBI; Aiden McCarthy also had two hits. Boesch, Donnie Kloewer, Thomas Anderson, Ogden and Besaw each rapped a single. Martinez walked twice and stole two bases.

As has been the case several other times this season, the Wildcat hitters put the ball in play but couldn’t find any holes.

Oak Harbor struck out only two times but mustered only two hits off Christian Hill.

Snohomish built a 5-0 lead before the Wildcats scored in the bottom of the sixth. Martinez singled and eventually scored on a wild pitch.

Andrew Dixon collected the other Wildcat hit, a single in the second inning.
