OHHS deserves to be hosts

I heard an interesting rumor about a or so week ago.

Newspapers are supposed to print only the facts, that is unless you’re the National Enquirer or one of those publications, but I think this particular rumor merits some press space.

It seems WesCo officials are so impressed by Wildcat Memorial Stadium, they are contemplating having Oak Harbor High School host next year’s WesCo district track meet.

What a major plum for the school and the community that would be!

Wouldn’t that be something — going from zero facilities to the head of the class in just one year.

It just goes to show you what happens when people put together a first-class operation, and Oak Harbor did an A-1 job with Wildcat Memorial Stadium.

Southern speed continues

Continuing with the sport that involves starting pistols and stop watches, the Coupeville High School track team has been going great guns in the past couple of weeks.

Recently, senior Kyle King bested the school record in the 3,200 meters by 18 seconds. He is also ranked 10th in the nation in the 3,200 with a time of 9:13.67.

Tyler King also ran a time of 4:34 in the 1,600 meters — the top clocking by a Washington freshman in 2008.

As a team, the Wolves had a good outing at the Lakewood meet, with both the boys and girls finishing second in their respective divisions.

Coach Randy King said 12 boys and nine girls recorded season best times or distances at the meet.

Baseball season is over

Amazing, we are just three days into the month of May and the Oak Harbor High School baseball team played its last game of the season April 29.

The Wildcats didn’t make the playoffs this season but if they had, from my point of view, the season is still way too short.

I attended several games this season and there was just one day when it wasn’t cold, or it wasn’t raining, or the wind wasn’t blowing — or a combination of all three.

Baseball is a game meant to be played in warm weather, unless you play inside a covered stadium, and when the season starts in March and ends in April, I guess fans and players just have to suck it up and deal have with inclement weather conditions.

Right now, the only baseball Oak Harbor folks have left is Little League and the Seattle Mariners.

Personally I’ll stick with the young kids, they are a lot more fun to watch than the guys making the big money.

Time to fix the facility

One last track note for this week.

It’s time folks jump on the bandwagon and start the ball rolling for getting the track at Coupeville High School resurfaced. I know there are a bunch of other priorities on the school district’s “to do” list, but some athletes have been injured on the track, suffering the dreaded shin splints and stress fractures, and have been forced to quit running this season.

Maybe the Booster Club can contact some people in the private sector and see if they can lend a hand.
