Oak Harbor stops South Whidbey twice | Legion

The Oak Harbor Legion baseball team knocked off island foe South Whidbey twice this week to raise its record to 8-2.

The Oak Harbor Legion baseball team knocked off island foe South Whidbey twice this week to raise its record to 8-2.

Oak Harbor defeated visiting South Whidbey 8-2 Tuesday and then won 6-4 in Langley Wednesday.

A four-run second inning was all Oak Harbor needed in the first game. Hits by Rhys Matilla and Danny Wolfe; walks to Clay Doughty, Tyler Snavely and Casiano Atienza; and an error off the bat of Teddy Peterschmidt provided the offense for the four runs.

South Whidbey cut the gap to 4-2 in the top of the third with a pair of unearned runs off Wildcat starter Peterschmidt.

Oak Harbor quickly responded with two runs of its own in the bottom half thanks to two errors and singles by Wolfe and Peterschmidt.

Two more runs in the sixth finished the scoring. Singles by Brent Mertins and Doughty sandwiched around an error and fielder’s choice scored the final pair.

Peterschmidt went the distance on the mound, giving up no earned runs, five hits and one walk while striking out five.

Wednesday, Oak Harbor led 6-1 going into the sixth behind starter Wolfe. Snavely relieved in the sixth and Oak Harbor hung on for the win.

Mertins got the scoring started with a triple in the second inning; Matilla drove him home.

Mertins and Matilla each finished with three hits, according to assistant coach Fred Orns, who handled the game in the absence of head coach Tyson VanDam.

Matilla’s night included a double and three RBI.

Wolfe added two hits and Snavely a double to spur the offense, Orns said.

“We played really well defensively,” Orns said, noting a key double play in the fourth to thwart a South Whidbey rally.

Coupeville’s Aaron Trumbull, Aaron Curtin, Kurtis Smith, Morgan Payne and Cole Payne play with the South Whidbey club (1-5).

Oak Harbor travels to Sedro-Woolley at 6 p.m. Thursday, June 13, for a nonleague game and then goes to Anacortes this weekend for the Steamer Tournament.

Friday, Oak Harbor opens the tournament at noon against Bellingham. Saturday, Oak Harbor meets Snohomish at 10 a.m. followed by Juanita at 12:30 p.m. Sunday, the Wildcats face Ferris at 10 a.m.
