A narrow loss to Mount Vernon didn’t dampen the mood of the Oak Harbor High School swim and dive team as it celebrated Senior Night Monday, Oct. 19, at John Vanderzicht Pool.

Oak Harbor’s three seniors — Sophie Dickinson, Mariel Empinado and Marissa Morris — were honored, photos were taken and coach Erin Bull was tossed into the pool.

Mount Vernon won the meet 93-87. Two of the 3A Wildcats’ three losses (against six wins) this fall have been to 4A schools.

The three seniors helped Oak Harbor keep close with the Bulldogs with solid performances.

The trio and Baelee Whitinger won the 400-meter freestyle relay (4:43.49); and Morris was first in the 200 free (2:22.8).

Morris, Dickinson, Taliah Black and Jillian Pape placed second in the 200 free relay (2:04.96), and Empinado, Whitinger, Black and Pape were second in the 200 medley relay (2:14.84).

Empinado added a third in the 200 individual medley and a fourth in the 100 backstroke (1:20.08), one spot behind Morris (1:12.15).

Dickinson finished third in the 400 free (5:36.13) and fourth in the 200 free (2:38.37).

Black was a double winner for the Wildcats, taking the 200 IM (2:40.21) and 100 breaststroke (1:22.52).

Natalie Hahn (155.2) and Kelly Gruenwald (136.8) finished 1-2 in diving.

Oak Harbor had a good shot at winning the meet, Bull said, but the Wildcats were missing several key swimmers, forcing her to reshuffle the relay lineups.

“The individual events were awesome,” Bull said. “We had some really good times; we had lots of good finishes.”

Pape finished second in the 50 free (28.66) and 100 butterfly (1:09.65) and is getting “closer and closer” to state qualifying times, Bull said.

Maya Krantz cut three seconds while placing third in the 100 breaststroke in 1:34.68, just one tenth off a district qualifying mark.

Other highlights, Bull said, were improvements in the 400 free. Whitinger dropped 16 seconds (5:41.55) and Angele Dennen trimmed seven (6:14.05) while placing fourth and fifth.

Oak Harbor (6-3) closes out the regular season when it joins Monroe (1-9) at Kamiak (13-1) at 3:15 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 22.
