The Oak Harbor Legion A baseball team finished up its league season with two lopsided wins over host Stanwood Sunday, July 10.
The Wildcats swept the double header 10-1 and 13-3 to finish with a 12-2 league mark (16-12 overall) and in second place. First-place Bellingham (10-1) has two games left with Glacier Peak (6-4).
Oak Harbor travels to Sedro-Woolley Tuesday, July 11, for a nonleague game at 5 p.m.
District tournament play begins Wednesday, July 20, at Skagit Valley College.
Oak Harbor led only 1-0 when it exploded for eight runs in the fourth inning to cruise to the first-game win over Stanwood.
Singles by Grant Schroeder and David Kusnick led to the game’s first run in the third inning, then came the eight-run eruption. At one point, Oak Harbor had eight hits in a span of nine batters. Mike Maletto and Ben Etzell each had two hits in the inning; Anthony Steward, Austyn Walker, Kusnick and Schroeder chipped in with singles; and Andrew Snavely doubled.
The game’s final run came in the seventh. Kusnick and Snavely singled, then Kusnick scored on Maletto’s sacrifice fly.
Snavely and Kusnick each finished with three hits; Stewart, Schroeder and Maletto had two each.
Jack Richter pitched the first six innings, allowing one unearned run and four hits while striking out five.
Stanwood jumped to a 3-0 lead after two innings in the second game, then Oak Harbor scored at least four runs in each of the next three innings to roll to the easy win.
In the bottom of the second, Oak Harbor blended hits by Teddy Peterschmidt and Maletto with a hit batter, two walks and sacrifice fly to score four runs.
In the third, Oak Harbor scored five runs on only two hits, a bunt single by Zach Zimmer and a two-run single by Maletto. Two walks and three errors helped the rally.
In the fourth, Oak Harbor added four more on the strength of RBI hits by Snavely (double), Zimmer and Maletto.
Maletto finished with three hits and Zimmer two to lead the offense. Zimmer pitched the final three innings and gave up only one hit while striking out six.
