Sedro-Woolley knocked North Whidbey into the losers bracket in the District 11 Major League (11/12) baseball tournament at Bakerview Park in Mount Vernon Sunday, July 10.

Central Whidbey also had a rugged beginning in the tournament, losing 3-0 to Anacortes Saturday and 16-6 to Burlington Sunday, and was eliminated.

North Whidbey, which had a bye in the first round, tangles with Burlington Monday, July 11, at 6 p.m. in a loser-out game at Bakerview.

Sedro-Woolley got off to a quick start when its used a double, error and double to record two runs in the first inning.

North Whidbey got one back in the bottom of the first when J.J. Mitchell tripled on the first pitch and scored on Robert Herring’s infield single.

In the second, North Whidbey tacked on four more to take a 5-2 lead. Taylor Kolste started things with a single, Kory Score reached on an error and Adam Nelson bunted for a base hit to load the bases. One run scored on an error off the bat of Mitchell, Kevyn Johnson’s base hit plated Score and Michael Aydelotte singled in two more.

A six-run fourth put Sedro-Woolley in control as it mixed four hits with two errors to take the lead.

Sedro-Woolley upped the score to 11-5 with three in the fifth thanks to two errors, two hits and a wild pitch.

North Whidbey rallied for three runs in the sixth. Dominic Dausey and Mitchell hit consecutive doubles for the first run. After an out, Jared Hunt walked. Mitchell scored on Herring’s second infield hit; the final tally came on an error. Two ground outs ended the game.

Central Whidbey gave up only two hits in its loss to Anacortes but was stung by walks.

Clay Reilly pitched three innings and recorded eight strikeouts.

Reilly, Cameron Toomey-Stout, Cole Payne and Keith Hovde collected hits for Central Whidbey.

Against Burlington, Central Whidbey trailed 3-1 heading into the top of the third when it rallied for three runs with two outs on RBI singles by Jake Hoagland and Johny Thurston.

An inning later, Burlington recovered to take the lead for good.

Reilly was 2-for-2 with two runs and an RBI.

Coach Lark Gustafson said, “All of the boys played hard and were congradulated for their effort and sportsmanship.”
