Oak Harbor senior Brent Mertins signed a letter of intent recently to play baseball for Edmonds Community College.

Mertins, who is hitting .330 this season, picked Edmonds because it is “a really good program; they move their kids to the next level.”

Mertins said he began to believe he could play college baseball during his sophomore season.

“I started to get looks then,” he said. “I started to work hard, and it eventually came.”

Mertins, a three-year starter at shortstop for Oak Harbor and a member of the Seattle Stars during summer ball, was first-team all-Wesco North last spring and honorable mention as a sophomore.

He expects to play second base or shortstop for Edmonds.

Edmonds is a perennial power in Northwest Athletic Conference and is currently leading the North Region with a 17-3 record, 31-7 overall.
