Behind a stellar performance by Ashleigh Merrill, the North Whidbey Aquatic Club’s girls team won the 39th Thunderbird Invitational in Anacortes May 15-17.

Merrill won all 12 of her events to earn high point honors in the 11-year-old girls division.

Haley Borja, 7, and Jillian Pape, 15, were two-time winners; and Lindsay Brown, 9, Patty Miessner, 13, and Alana Miller, 9, won once.

Merrill and Pape clocked multiple 2015 Pacific Northwest Swimming long course championship qualifying times.

“Many lifetime best times were posted by all NWAC swimmers,” coach Dick Taylor said, “and many of the meter times posted were faster than the yard times which preceded them.”

NWAC also collected 17 second-place finishes in the meet, led by Miessner with five. Brown and Miller recorded three each, Borja and Pape had two apiece, and Grace Chargualaf, 12, and Jacob Swanson, 10, picked up one each.
