Scoring four runs in the final inning to snap a 2-2 tie, the Marysville-Pilchuck High School baseball team stopped host Oak Harbor 6-2 Tuesday, April 14, to remain in first place in the Wesco 3A North.
Had the Wildcats won, they would have moved into a tie for first with the Tomahawks.
The two teams meet in Marysville (5-0, 8-2) at 4 p.m. Wednesday, April 15, and come back to Oak Harbor (3-2, 5-4) for the series finale at 4 p.m. Friday, April 17.
Oak Harbor jumped on M-P for two first-inning runs then went scoreless the rest of the way.
In the first with one out, C.J. Meders was hit by a pitch and Brent Mertins singled. The two eventually scored on a throwing error by the Tomahawk shortstop.
The Wildcats had base runners in all but the sixth inning, including runners at second and third with one out in the third inning, but couldn’t add another run.
Oak Harbor starter Tyler Snavely gave up a run in the second inning on a walk and single and another in the third on a walk and two base hits. He cruised from there until the seventh.
Marysville-Pilchuck used two walks, four singles, an error and a passed ball to score four runs in the top of the seventh inning.
Oak Harbor collected only four hits in the game, two from Mertins. Chris Trisler and Quentin Tungate added singles.
