The Oak Harbor High School soccer team played its second straight strong match but fell 2-1 in overtime to visiting Shorewood Tuesday, April 14.

Last week, the Wildcats fell 3-0 to the state’s top-ranked 2A team, Shorecrest.

“We lost 3-0, but did play an excellent game,” coach Brian Thompson said. “Jared Hoyt did a great job in the goal against a very skilled team.”

Oak Harbor, winners of only one match, gave Shorewood (5-1, 6-2-2), ranked 14th in the state 3A poll, all it could handle.

“Our players did the best job they have all year,” Thompson said. “The coaching staff is very proud of our team.”

After a 0-0 halftime tie, Oak Harbor’s J.J. Mitchell scored midway through the second period with an assist from Eric Jensen. The goal held up until the final minutes.

Shorewood had a breakaway with four minutes left, and a T-bird was fouled by a Wildcat slide tackle in the box. Shorewood converted the penalty kick to even the game and force overtime.

With about one minute left in the first overtime, a Shorewood corner kick was deflected off an Oak Harbor player and into the goal for the game-winner.

“Terrible end to a great game,” Thompson said.

Oak Harbor (1-3-1, 1-7-1) heads to Marysville-Pilchuck (2-4, 3-5-2) for a 7 p.m. game Friday, April 17.
