It’s not how you start but how you finish.

The Coupeville High School Soccer team is following that adage this season and followed it in its 4-1 win over visiting Granite Falls Wednesday, April 24, on Senior Night.

After losing their first 11 matches, the Wolves have now won three of their final four. And Wednesday, Coupeville started slowly against Granite Falls but rushed by the Tigers with four goals – three from Nathan Lamb – over the final 24 minutes.

Granite Falls (2-11, 2-13) scored in the first five minutes and that lead stood until Lamb broke through in the 56th minute.

Lamb, off an assist from Josh Wilsey, lobbed in a shot from 18 yards out to knot the match.

Six minutes later, Wilsey took a long, low drive by keeper Kole Kellison and dribbled through the back of the Tiger defense to score the go-ahead goal.

In the 67th minute, Lamb, one of nine seniors playing their final home match, connected again.

In less than two minutes, Lamb struck again. This time he took a pass from Jeremy Copenhaver and tapped the ball in to complete his hat trick.

Coupeville coach Paul Mendes was pleased with Copenhaver’s assist. He credited the sophomore with patience, not taking a shot from a severe angle and getting the ball to the open Lamb.

Mendes said, “Jeremy did not panic and kept his composure.”

Mendes credited the second-half surge to playing through-balls sooner and the overall effort of Lamb.

“Nathan played a great game; it wasn’t just the goals,” Mendes said.

“It was a nice way for the seniors to go out,” he said. “They are a great group.”

The Wolves (2-11, 3-12) close out the regular season at King’s (6-7, 6-8-1) at 7 p.m. Friday, April 26.

Coupeville enters district play Wednesday, May 1; the site and opponent have not been determined.
