Two late goals lifted the Oak Harbor High School soccer team to a 2-0 non-league win over Lynnwood at Wildcat Memorial Stadium Tuesday, Sept. 15.
The Wildcats also fought to a 1-1 tie at Ferndale Saturday, Sept. 12.
With about four minutes remain in the Lynnwood (0-3) match, Caylie Etherington passed to Lydia Peplinski, who hammered in the first goal to break the 0-0 tie.
Peplinski passed to Etherington, and she pushed the ball to Malia Hansen for the final goal with only seconds remaining in the match.
“We played a pretty rough match,” Oak Harbor coach Mike Lonborg said. “Lynnwood is always a very physical game for us.”
The Wildcats failed to take advantage of several good scoring opportunities early in the match, Lonborg said.
“(The) second half was a very back and forth game with both teams trying to counter quickly,” he said. “It took us a long time to finally break down on the door.”
The Ferndale (1-1-2) match was scoreless at halftime.
“We didn’t have great control and our touch was a bit off,” Lonborg said.
“Second half we came out strong and started working the one, two passes and Gillian Crossley scored off an assist by Caylie Etherington. Nice through ball, and Gill hit it well and placed it in the back of the net.”
Ferndale countered with a header off a free kick.
From there, it was a back-and-forth struggle, Lonborg said, with both teams hitting the goal frame with shots.
“The one really nice thing I got out of the game, is that after Ferndale tied it up, the girls didn’t fold,” Lonborg said. “They kept up their play and the last 10 minutes of the game had four or five really good opportunities that didn’t go in, but the girls kept working.”
Oak Harbor (2-0-1) jumps into conference play when it goes to Stanwood (2-1-1) at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 17.
