The Coupeville girls basketball team recorded two firsts in its season opener Thursday, Dec. 2.

The Wolves won their first game of the season 43-30 over visiting Concrete, and new coach Jackie Bykonen picked up her first win as varsity coach.

Katie Smith and Cassidi Rosenkrance scored four points each in the first quarter to help Coupeville take a 12-3 lead, and Kendra O’Keefe hit a big three, according to Bykonen, in the second period to spark the Wolves.

Bykonen said her club showed some of its first-game butterflies in the second quarter as the Lions cut the margin to five, 20-15, at the break. That would be as close as Concrete would get.

Bykonen said, “The girls made some corrections and responded well and never lost the lead.”

Rosenkrance helped Coupeville through its rough patches, Bykonen said, with “really good leadership and hustle.”

Coupeville also put its depth on display in the win. Bykonen said, “We have 10 girls who can play; that really helps.” Nine scored, led by Rosenkrance with 12.

O’Keefe finished with eight points, Smith seven, Courtney Arnold four, Megan Metlow four, Taya Boonstra three, Bessie Walstad two, Jai’lysa Hoskins two and Amanda Manker one.

Coupeville travels to Meridian Friday, Dec. 3, to take on the Trojans at 5:15 p.m.
