A 24-0 run washed away a 15-point deficit and lifted the Oak Harbor boys basketball team to a 47-42 win over visiting Marysville-Pilchuck Thursday, Dec. 2.

The Wildcats spurted to a 5-0 lead, but the Tomahawks (0-2) led 20-10 at the end of the first period.

Oak Harbor went on a six-minute scoring drought, and with 3:52 left in the first half it trailed 26-11. Then the Tommies went dry and would not score again until 41 seconds were left in the third quarter.

During that time, Oak Harbor mounted its 24-0 run to shock the Tomahawks and wrestle control of the game.

The first 10 points of the run came in the final three minutes of the first half, and Josiah Miller fueled the burst with back-to-back steals and fastbreak buckets.

While Oak Harbor’s 1-3-1 zone stymied Marysville, the Wildcat offense continued to pour it on.

A hoop by Mike Washington Jr. tied the game at 26 with 5:37 left in the third quarter, then 20 seconds later Denzel Massey scored to give Oak Harbor a lead it would build to nine, 35-26.

Marysville, however, wasn’t through. It bounced back to tie it up at 35 with 6:21 left in the game. Washington scored to quell the rally and Oak Harbor slowly pulled away.

Coach Mike Washington Sr. said, “We fought back from adversity; the kids were resilient.”

He noted that his club made some mistakes down the stretch, particularly in shot selection, then added, “Bottom line, we won.”

Washington liked the effort of Massey, Kevawn Brooks and Washington Jr.: “They played well; they battled it out.”

Washington Jr. topped Oak Harbor with 15 points, eight rebounds and two assists; Massey added 11 points. They were followed by Jay Stout with six points, Miller four, Brooks four, Matt Burgoyne three, Trace Paul two and Connor Paul two.

Trace Paul collected seven rebounds and Brooks six.

Both teams struggled at the line. Oak Harbor missed 15 of 30 free throws; M-P hit just one of eight. The Wildcats shot 38.5 percent from the field (only 28 percent in the first half).

Part of the Wildcats’ shooting woes can be attributed to the shot-altering presence of M-P’s 6-11 Jeffery Miles in the paint.

Marysville shot 34.6 percent for the game (only 25 percent the second half).

The Wildcats (1-1) go to Lake Stevens Friday, Dec. 3, at 7:30 p.m.
