Glacier Peak’s high-octane offense with quarterback Kevin Campbell at the throttle zipped by Oak Harbor 49-12 at Wildcat Memorial Stadium Friday, Sept. 10.
The loss dropped the Wildcats to 0-2; Glacier Peak, the preseason favorites to win the Wesco 3A title, moved to 2-0.
Oak Harbor plays at Shorewood next Friday at 5 p.m.
Campbell completed 26 of 37 passes for 398 yards and five touchdowns; he was intercepted twice (both by Justin Counts). He also sat out the fourth quarter.
The Grizzlies turned the ball over on downs in the game’s first possession, then in their next five series they scored – and scored quickly. The five scoring possessions averaged five plays, 60 yards and 71 seconds.
GP’s Tanner Southard caught six passes for 154 yards and two touchdowns, and John Bonner hauled in 11 passes for 125 yards and two scores. Each played less than three quarters.
Ironically, Campbell scored the Grizzlies first touchdown as a receiver. He pitched to running back Hunter Lundstrom who threw back to Campbell for a 10-yard TD to get the scoring going in the first quarter.
Glacier Peak led 28-0 at the end of the first quarter and 35-0 at the break.
The Grizzlies finished the game with 494 total yards to 188 for Oak Harbor.
Oak Harbor quarterback Matt Burgoyne, under heavy pressure all night, dodged and ducked his way to completing 19 of 33 passes for 160 yards and one touchdown; he had three interceptions.
Mike Washington caught nine passes for 75 yards and a touchdown, Josiah Miller caught five for 36 yards and Counts three for 43.
After the early scoring blitz by the Grizzlies, the Oak Harbor offense started to eat up the clock and keep the winners off the board. The defense also came up with three turnovers to slow the Grizzlies.
Oak Harbor scored with just under 20 seconds left in the third quarter when Burgoyne hit Washington from 16 yards out.
Isaiah Trower raced around right end for a 36-yard TD run in the game’s final minute for the Wildcats’ second touchdown.
Although his team has dropped its first two games of the season, Oak Harbor head coach Jay Turner has seen some positives in the play of his club. He is particularly pleased with the leadership of the seniors who are “keeping the kids positive on the sidelines.” He added, “Sam Wolfe, Aaron Boesch and Justin Counts have shown great leadership.”
After facing Glacier Peak, the team picked by the coaches to win the Wesco 3A in the preseason poll, the Wildcats face the team picked to finish last, Shorewood. (Oak Harbor was tabbed for fourth in one poll and fifth in another in the eight-team league.)
The Thunderbirds, 0-10 last year, gave Everett a handful before falling 13-7 in the season opener Sept. 3. Shorewood was burned by two big plays (89-yard run and 73-yard pass) in the second half. Friday Shorewood came from behind to defeat Lynnwood 31-30.
