Veronica Crownover’s first-inning grand slam ignited the Coupeville High School softball team’s 13-3 winning effort over visiting South Whidbey Tuesday, April 23.
The Wolves (5-2, 8-6) held onto second place in the North Sound Conference with the win.
They travel to third-place Cedar Park Christian (4-3, 9-4) for a 4 p.m. game Monday, April 29, and then host first-place Granite Falls (6-1, 9-5) at 4 p.m. Wednesday, May 1.
Coupeville 13, South Whidbey 3 (five innings)
After South Whidbey scored a run in the top of the first inning, Coupeville countered with Crownover’s big blast.
Scout Smith led off with a single, then with two outs, Sarah Wright and Mollie Bailey walked to set up Crownover’s four-run home run.
The Falcons scored twice in the top of the second inning to make it 4-3, and the Wolves pulled away from there.
Coupeville scored four times in the bottom of the second after two outs and the bases empty. Smith reached on an error; Emma Mathusek walked; and Chelsea Prescott, Wright, and Bailey hit consecutive singles to push across the four runs.
In the third, a single by Nicole Laxton, a walk to Smith and doubles by Mathusek and Wright plated three runs.
Coupeville wrapped up the scoring with three runs in the fifth inning, highlighted by singles by Prescott and Bailey.
Wright finished with two doubles, two runs and three RBI; Prescott had two hits, two runs and two RBI; Bailey singled twice and drove in three runs; Smith singled and scored four runs; Mathusek doubled, scored twice and collected two RBI; Crownover homered and drove in four runs; and Laxton singled.
Izzy Wells threw a five-hitter with six strikeouts.
“I am very happy with how we are hitting hard line drives and hitting as a team,” coach Kevin McGranahan said. “We need to carry this momentum into the post season.”
