Coupeville claims district title, qualifies 16 for state / Track

The Coupeville High School boys track team won its first district title in 12 years with a stellar showing Friday and Saturday, May 18 and 19, in Renton.

The Coupeville girls finished fourth, just 13 points out of first place in the nine-team meet.

Those efforts helped the Wolves qualify 16 individuals for the state meet Thursday through Saturday, May 24-26, at Eastern Washington University in Cheney.

The top two in each event earned a trip to Cheney.

The Coupeville boys scored 166 points, easily out-distancing second place Bellevue Christian by 32.

While the Wolves ran away with the boys title, Bellevue Christian eked out the win in the girls meet, scoring 136 points, four more than Charles Wright Academy. Klahowya had 126 and Coupeville 123.

The Coupeville girls set two school records at district. Lindsey Roberts lowered her 100-hurdle time to 15.26, and Mallory Kortuem upped his pole vault record to 7-09.

Jacob Smith led the Coupeville boys with wins in two individual events (100, 11.17; 200, 22.41) and two relays.

Smith, Cameron Toomey-Stout, Sean Toomey-Stout and Jean Lund Olsen won the 4×100 in 45 seconds; and Smith, Henry Wynn, Sean Toomey-Stout and Danny Conlisk took the 4×400 (3:33.72).

Conlisk (400, 51.25), Sean Toomey-Stout (long jump, 19-05.25) and Cameron Toomey-Stout (triple jump, 39-08) also won individual events.

Chris Battaglia (discus, 125-02) and Ariah Bepler (high jump, 6-02) claimed the other firsts.

Cameron Toomey-Stout (long jump, 19-01.25) and Bepler (triple jump, 38-08) added second places and will compete at state in multiple events.

Ryan Labrador earned a state spot by taking second in the shot put (41-04.5).

The Coupeville girls won only one event, the 4×100. Ashlie Shank, Kortuem, Maya Toomey-Stout and Roberts clocked a 51.18.

The quartet will also run the 4×200 at state, placing second at district in 1:49.53.

Other second places were recorded by Roberts (100 hurdles, 15.26), Allison Wenzel (discus, 95-01), Lauren Bayne (javelin, 106-11) and Cassidy Moody (long jump, 15-04.75).

Several Wolves will enter the state meet with marks that rank among Washington’s best in the 1A classification: Smith, second, 100, 11.12; third, 200, 22.41; Conlisk, eighth, 400, 51.25; and Roberts, third, 100 hurdles, 15.26.

Fourth, boys: Conlisk, 200, 23.04.

Fourth, girls: Ja’Tarya Hoskins, 100 hurdles, 18.04; Emma Smith, shot put, 32-00.5; 4×400 (Shank, Lucy Sandahl, Catherine Lhamon, Natalie Hollrigel), 4:42.82.

Fifth, boys: Lund Olsen, 100, 11.77; Baumann, 300 hurdles, 47.75; Keahi Sorrows, shot put, 40-07.5; Battaglia, javelin, 129-08.

Fifth, girls: Sandahl, 1,600, 5:53.21; Lhamon, 3,200, 12:53.25; Smith, discus, 92-01; Bayne, high jump, 4-08.

Sixth, boys: Battaglia, shot put, 39-11.5; high jump, 5-02.

Sixth, girls: Hoskins, long jump, 13-06; Bayne, triple jump, 28-09.5.

Seventh, boys: Wynn, 100, 12.07; Thane Peterson, discus, 87-09; pole vault, 8-06.

Seventh, girls: Hoskins, 300 hurdles, 54.57; Kylie Chernikoff, shot put, 29-07.75; Hannah Davidson, discus, 72-02.

Eighth, boys: Wynn, 200, 24.45.
