“Oak Harbor cheerleaders captured two titles – top team and top cheerleaders – at the National Cheerleading Association Camp last week at the University of Washington.The Wildcat varsity cheerleaders continued the tradition by winning the title of top team for the sixth time in seven years.To grab this title, the Cats beat out nine other teams on the last day of camp when each squad performed a cheer incorporating tumbling, stunts and jumps. The Wildcat cheerleaders were one of only two squads to win a bid to the NCA National competition in December in Texas.The Wildcats also won stunt, jump and motion awards, plus the Spirit Stick.Every year the squad gets better, coach Pam Headridge said. This year was no exception. We are starting the season with more difficulty than we had at the end of last season.My seniors are the motivators and I feel the school will be seeing some unbelievable stunts because of them.Several cheerleaders nabbed individual awards.Senior Jenny Bragg received the honor of top cheerleader out of more than 150 cheerleaders at the camp.Varsity cheerleaders Jenny Bragg, J.P. Brazelton, Sheila Rains, Francisco McGee, Sarah Gohn, Eliza Comicho, Kristin Acton, Angela Lopez, Andy Mesner and Stephanie Bragg received NCA All American nominations along with junior varsity cheerleaders Keilah Oatman, Kristin Loan and Devo Shurlock.Jenny Bragg, McGee, Eliza Gohn, Sarah Gohn and Mesner were selected for the NCA All-American Team and will be eligible to perform in the Hula Bowl and Orange Bowl.Both Jenny Bragg and Erin Weinert were given special recommendations from the camp’s staff to apply for NCA staff positions next year.The junior varsity cheerleaders – made up of 50 percent freshmen – left their mark at camp by winning the megaphone award and were voted by the camp participants as the team that contributed the most to the spirit of camp.They also received recognition for stunting and motions and were selected as the top team finalist.”
