Cascade edges ‘Cats in battle of unbeatens | Swimming

The Cascade High School swim team nipped Oak Harbor in four individual races and then nipped the Wildcats 88-82 in team scoring to win the battle of two undefeated teams Monday, Sept. 24, at John Vanderzicht Memorial Pool.

The Cascade High School swim team nipped Oak Harbor in four individual races and then nipped the Wildcats 88-82 in team scoring to win the battle of two undefeated teams Monday, Sept. 24, at John Vanderzicht Memorial Pool.

The 4A Bruins (6-0) won four events by a half second or less and nine of the 11 events to overcome 3A Oak Harbor’s (6-1) depth.

Oak Harbor coach Amy Merkley said, “It’s tough when you just get out touched at the end.”

The Wildcats did earn four state-qualifying times. Two came from Emily Huffer, who placed second in the 200-meter freestyle (2:11.52) and 100 butterfly (1:04.58).

The others came in the 200 medley and 200 free relays. Huffer, Akasha Trisler, Lauren Vagt and Irysh Concepcion won the medley relay (2:09.9); and Huffer, Therese Desquitado, Marissa Morris and Trisler finished second in the 200 free relay (1:56.81).

Desquitado earned the other Oak Harbor first in the 100 backstroke (1:15.07).

The Wildcats swim at Meadowdale (2-1) at 2:45 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 25.
