“Ugh” was the first word coach Willie Smith used to describe his Coupeville High School baseball team’s 14-3 loss at Granite Falls Tuesday, April 23.

Things started well for the Wolves who scored single runs in each of the first and third innings.

“Then the wheels, cover and reins fell of the wagon,” Smith said.

The Tigers (5-10, 5-12) plated 12 runs in an ugly third inning. A hit batter and two walks loaded the bases. An infield single, error, dropped fly ball for another error and a single pushed across six runs.

A single, walk and single produced a pitching change, but the assault continued. A single, triple, error, walk and ground out led to six more runs.

Coupeville scored in the first on an RBI double by Morgan Payne. In the second, Kurtis Smith led with a double, stole third and scored on Drew Chan’s grounder.

The Wolves’ final run came in the fourth when Jake Tumblin singled, went to third on Aaron Curtin’s single and scored on Aaron Trumbull’s grounder.

Kurtis Smith topped the offense with two hits.

Coach Smith said, “We just played poorly all around and did not respond to adversity well at all.”

Coupeville (5-10, 7-10) goes to Sultan (4-11, 4-12) at 4 p.m. Wednesday, April 23.
