The Coupeville High School baseball team put together a solid all-around game in its season-opening 10-0 win over visiting Concrete Tuesday, March 16.

Coach Willie Smith was pleased with this troops’ effort. He said, on the defensive side, “We played errorless ball. The pitchers located well and changed speeds.”

The Wolves used three pitchers, J.D. Wilcox, Ian Smith and Alex McClain. The three combined to pitch a two-hit shutout, strikeout eight and walk zero. Wilcox threw the first three innings and did not allow a hit and struck out five.

Analyzing his offense, Smith said, “We hit the ball hard on the ground and for line drives. That is something we have been working on.”

The Wolves clubbed 10 hits. Wilcox finished three-for-four with three runs; Smith was one-for-two with a triple, two RBI and was on base four out of five times.

Chad Brookhouse and Erik King were each two-for-four with an RBI; and Chase Griffin was one-for-two with two runs batted in.

The Wolves were up just 1-0 heading into the bottom of the third when they erupted for six runs. The inning was highlighted by Smith’s two-RBI triple and a two-run single by Griffin.

The game was called in the bottom of the sixth because of the 10-run rule.

Coupeville hosts Overlake at 4 p.m. Friday, March 19, then starts league play next week against preseason favorite Archbishop Thomas Murphy.
