After squandering an early lead, the Coupeville girls fastpitch team came back to defeat visiting Concrete 11-7 Tuesday, March 16, in the season opener for both teams.

The Wolves zipped to a 4-0 lead after two innings thanks to a three-run first, but the Lions responded with a five-run third to take the lead.

Coupeville put together its own five spot in the bottom of the fourth to go up 9-5. The Lions cut the lead to 9-7 in the sixth, but the Wolf Pack matched Concrete’s effort in its half of the inning to finish the scoring.

Coupeville coach Denny Zylstra said, “We didn’t hit as well as I would like us to, but we were aggressive at the plate. Errors in the infield hurt us.”

On the positive side, Zylstra was pleased with the pitching of Alexis Trumbull, Autumn Stevenson and Megan Smith. “All three threw extremely well.” The trio combined for 11 strikeouts and gave up seven hits.

The Wolves racked up eight hits led by Smith who collected a single and triple in four at bats and knocked in two runs. Stevenson added a double and RBI.

Coupeville was aided by 11 Concrete walks and four Lion errors.

The Wolves hit the road for games at Friday Harbor Thursday, March 18, and Archbishop Thomas Murphy Wednesday, March 24. The next home game is Friday, March 26, at 4 p.m. against Granite Falls.
