The Coupeville baseball team rallied several times, but the final effort fell on run short as the Wolves lost 5-4 at Concrete Saturday, March 26, in a nonleague game.

Down by one in the seventh, Brandt Bodamer led off with a double but was left stranded at third and the Lions (1-3) held on for the win.

Coupeville coach Willie Smith said, “It definitely was our best effort in a lot of ways. While we made some mental miscues and a couple of errors, we were able to come back from those and battled the entire game.”

Down early, Coupeville got back in the game on Kole Kellison’s two-run double, and then Ian Smith knocked in a run in the fifth to even the score at 3.

Concrete jumped back out in front with two runs in the bottom of the inning.

Jake Tumblin walked in the sixth, stole second and then scored on Ben Carlson’s hit to make it 5-4.

The Wolves, however, were unable to take advantage of Bodamer’s seventh-inning double.

Coach Smith said, “Offensively, we were more opportunistic than consistent. We had some kids who had some very good at bats, and while they didn’t all end up with hits, they did move guys over for us.”

Wade Schaef collected the only other Coupeville hit; however, the Wolves helped themselves offensively by stealing a season-high seven bases.

Smith was also pleased with the pitching of Alex McClain and Bodamer: “Alex and Brandt pitched very well, both located the ball well and Alex really mixed up his pitches.”

McClain pitched four innings and gave up three runs (two earned), struck out four and issued no walks.

The Wolves (1-4, 0-2) get back into league action Monday, March 28, at home with Lakewood (5-0) at 4 p.m.
