July 18 was a day of firsts for many swimmers at the John Vanderzicht Memorial Pool.
At the three-way meet against Anacortes and Bellingham the North Whidbey Aquajets fielded its largest contingent ever, with 85 swimmers participating in the meet.
For many of the 85 competitors, it was their first swim meet after joining the Aquajets. Their lack of experience was easily made up for in enthusiasm as they bravely mounted the starting blocks and eagerly launched themselves into their races.
First-time racers for the Aquajets were Ridgely Briddell, Anna Burmeister, Jonathan Cabigting, Jose Cabigting, Mariella Empinado, Breanna Grehan, Tyler Grehan, Rheeno Kwak, Clayton Livermore, Jillian Pape, Justin Sarns, Patricia Sarns and Chris Trisler.
Many of the more experienced NWAC’ers also achieved significant “firsts.”

Borden also captured his first-ever Swimmer of the Meet title. Competing in only his second meet, he dropped an average of 25 seconds per 50 meters, scored in two of his events and swam two “smokin’ fast” relay splits according to head coach Neil Romney.
Aquajets Mara Powers, age 9, Olivia Tungate age 7 and 12-year-old De Leon Guerrero garnered themselves blue ribbon finishes. They were the only three NWAC’ers to place first in all three of their individual events.
