As a longtime resident of Admirals Cove I read with interest Paul Boring’s story (News-Times, July 7) of the bald eagle population soaring on Whidbey and of the Cove’s peacock losing nearly a third of its tail feathers to one of our resident eagles.

A while back I was walking down at the swimming pool end of the Admirals Cove pond when I noticed two men in a rowboat out on the water. This was very unusual as we seldom see a boat on the pond let alone anyone fishing.

Thinking that this would make an interesting picture I got my camera ready to take a couple of shots when one of those eagles swooped down and grabbed the transom of that rowboat and lifted it right off of the water. I guess that the eagle figured that instead of taking just one fish back to the nest he would just take a boat load back.

Sometime ago The Whidbey Examiner published a photo of an eagle trying to pick up a cow. I noticed that cow’s hooves were still on the ground. I am enclosing a picture of our eagle actually lifting that rowboat off of the water.

About those two men. No one else seems to have seen this happen and I didn’t recognize them as neighbors. Someone thought that they were visiting here from Ballard.
