Teruko M. “Terry” Murphy died Jan. 29, 2006 at Island Hospital, Anacortes, at the age of 76. She was born April 1, 1929 in Yokuska, Japan to Zenshichi Minoguchi and Sadako (Yahagi) Minoguchi. Terry was a college graduate with a degree as a teacher and a dietitian.
Terry was married to William J. “Bill” Murphy in Yokohama on Oct. 9, 1953. She and Bill moved to the United States in 1955, making Oak Harbor their permanent home. Bill died in March of 1992.
Terry began a battle with cancer in 1955, when she was diagnosed with thyroid cancer. Following radical surgery, she continued her battle, developing a lifetime of healthy dieting and exercise.
Teruko suffered a slight stroke in 1981. As a part of her recovery, she began painting classes under the direction of local artist, Tony Turpin. She started showing her skills at local art events and eventually at the Anacortes Arts and Crafts Festival and the Island County Fair. Terry moved on to teaching water coloring to her own students. She was very proud of the talent she had developed. Her greatest strength was her positive attitude toward life.
Terry is survived by one sister Masako Ono of Japan, a stepson William Murphy and wife Dorothy of Sequim, three grandchildren, five great grandchildren and eight great-great grandchildren, and her longtime companion, Jim Lamb of Oak Harbor.
Terry requested no funeral services be conducted. Cremation was held with burial to follow in Japan. Arrangements were entrusted to Burley Funeral Chapel, Oak Harbor.
