Sue Morrow Flanagan

Sue Morrow Flanagan passed away peacefully in her sleep at home in Langley on July 6, 2010, after surviving eight years of cancer. She was 58 years old.

Sue was born to Roy and Dorine Morrow on Dec. 20, 1951, in Oregon City, Ore. Sue lived and worked all over the world including Fiji, Samoa, Nepal and London. During the late 1970s and early 1980s, Sue worked as a foreign correspondent for The Financial Times in Kathmandu, Nepal, specializing in coverage of political events, Third World development, historic preservation, mountaineering, endangered species and human rights. Her work has been published in The Guardian, The Economist, The Washington Post, Readers Digest, The Observer and many other international and U.S. publications.

As a broadcast journalist, she also worked for the BBC World Service, BBC Television, the Canadian Broadcasting System and World Wide Pictures. After 12 years abroad, Sue returned to the United States in 1982. While raising her children, Sue worked in marketing and public relations for Clearwater’s Great Hudson River Revival, Historic Hudson Valley and the National Maritime Historical Society. In 1989, she launched Morgan Brown, Ltd which duly published Water Ways: New York’s Waterfront News, which was a 20,000 to 50,000 circulation newspaper dedicated to balanced coverage of development and environmental issues throughout New York State. She has worked as the president of two not-for-profits: The Weston Charitable Foundation as well as The Kitchawan Institute, which continues as a sustainability think tank with a large board of architects and engineers who meet regularly to discuss green buildings and sustainability. In 2006, Sue and her husband, Tom, moved back to the Pacific Northwest where she enjoyed fishing for salmon and catching trout.

Sue is survived by her husband, Tom Laurenson; her daughter, Lisa and her son, Ruain Flanagan. Also by her father Roy Morrow and brother, Dean. A private family burial will take place on Friday, July 9. Friends are invited to share their stories of Sue at her wake on Saturday, July 10, at 3 p.m. at the home of Faith Wilder at 5464 Vistaire Place, Bayview. An additional memorial service will be scheduled in the New York area later this summer. The family is very grateful to Dr. Lupe Salazar and the infusion team at SCCA.
