Sandra Carrothers1935–2023

Sandra (Sandi) J. Carrothers passed away on Saturday, December 16, 2023, doing what she loved — rushing from one event to the next. Sandi was born on April 15, 1935, to William and Maybelle Miller in Davenport, Iowa. She attended the University of Iowa where she met and later married Richard (Dick) Carrothers. In June 1957, Dick began his dental career in the Navy, along with Sandi, and together they raised four children. The military life took them to new homes across the United States as well as Naples, Italy, finally ending their military life in Oak Harbor, Washington. Although they divorced in 1980, Dick and Sandi remained lifelong friends.

Just as Dick’s military career was coming to an end, Sandi’s job as a feature writer for the Whidbey News Times (where she worked for 11 years), took off. The Whidbey News Times was her connection to the community as well as co-workers she loved as family. In addition to her work, she was involved in just about everything, from being a PTA mom, President of the Officers Wives Club, and Navy League to organizing social groups, such as the Birthday Club and the Ski Bums. Near and dear to her heart was her beloved Lions — following her dad into the Lions Club in Miami and then joining the Oak Harbor Lions in 1999.

In her spare time, Sandi loved to travel, play Bridge and Mahjong, watch her Seahawks and Krakens, and dance into the wee hours of the morning.

Sandi will be laid to rest January 12, 2024, in a private ceremony for immediate family. She is survived by her children Cathleen (Jerry), Kim (Dan), Kelly, and Kevin, ex-husband Dick Carrothers, brother Michael Miller, sister-in-law Joan Charters, 9 grandchildren, 3 great-grandchildren, 2 nieces and one nephew.

A Celebration of Life which is open to all will be held January 13, 2-5 pm at the Oak Harbor Yacht Club (Seahawk attire encouraged)!

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made on behalf of Sandi to the Oak Harbor Lions Club or Navy Marine Corps Relief Society – NMCRS Whidbey Island
