Marie Van Dyk

Marie Van Dyk, 95, of Oak Harbor, passed away on Jan. 23, 2011. She was born Jan. 17, 1916, to Gysbert and Alberdina (Roelofs) VandeWerfhorst in Nijverdal, The Netherlands. She was the third of seven children. While she was still a child her parents immigrated to the U.S. After a short stay in Michigan they settled in Orange City, Iowa, where Marie began her schooling. Her parents then moved the family to a farm near Oak Harbor on Whidbey Island.

On Sept. 18, 1943, Marie married William Van Dyk of Oak Harbor. Together they had two children.

Marie worked as a loan officer at Olympic Bank and later for her brother-in-law at Geralds Jewelry and Gifts.

She especially enjoyed her association with her church family and loved to bake, do needlework, play the piano and organ, and enjoyed a good cup of coffee with her friends. Her true devotion however, was to her family.

Marie was preceded in death by her husband, her daughter Janis, and two sisters, Minnie Riepma and Retta Baan. She is survived by her brother Frank VandeWerfhorst; sisters Gerry Atwood, Jo Ernst and Janet Fikse, all of Oak Harbor; son Gerald Van Dyk of Bellevue; three grandchildren, Heather Smith and husband Bryan of Pensacola, Fla., Ashley Van Dyk of New York, N.Y., and Adam Van Dyk and wife Kristen of Chicago; and two great grandchildren.

Inurnment took place Jan. 27 at Maple Leaf Cemetery followed by a Memorial Service at Whidbey Presbyterian Church in Oak Harbor.
