Businessman, fisherman, father and husband, Kenneth Richard “Dick” Trefts passed from this life on Saturday, Sept. 5, 2010, surrounded by his family.
Born Jan. 22, 1926, in Santa Cruz, Calif., the oldest of four sons to Kenneth E. and Alice M. Trefts, he was preceded in death by his parents, his brother William “Billy” and his brother Thomas. He leaves behind his beloved wife of 61 years, Patricia M. “Patsy” Trefts. Daughters Nancy Akada, Linda Trefts, and Carol Mendoza, seven grandchildren, and 12 great-grandchildren all called him Papa. He is also survived by his brother, Jack, numerous cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.
Dick proudly served his country during WWII as a Navy signalman aboard the carrier USS Core. He was an energetic member of American Legion Post 56, and California 40 and 8 Post 1179, earning honors in the 1950s as the youngest Chef De Gare in the state of California at that time. He served as manager and coach for the local American Legion baseball team as well as referee for local high school football teams.
His integrity, loyalty, business acumen and sense of adventure made Dick a vital member in a wide circle of enduring friends. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, traveling, photography, cooking, gardening, model railroading, and was a private and commercial pilot. His family was always his first priority, and summer road trips all over the US and Western Canada instilled his love of travel and adventure in his children and grandchildren.
Dick and Patricia retired in 1987 to Washington, one of Dick’s favorite ports of call during his Navy years. He was a member and past president of Puget Sound Anglers, actively working to support and enhance local salmon fishing by growing and releasing thousands of yearling salmon.
Visser Funeral Home in Langley is in charge of final arrangements. At his request, no formal service is planned at this time. His family will hold a private gathering.
