John H. Gartner, “The Bead Man,” age 68 of Oak Harbor, died May 14, 2010, surrounded by loving family, in Anacortes.

John was born Dec. 16, 1941 in Brooklyn, N.Y., to Hans and Ruth (Wergeles) Gartner. He served 30 years in the United States Navy. He was a loved husband and father, and a very proud grandfather.

John is survived by wife Pamela; daughter Lisa Ruth Shimkus Gartner and her husband John; son John Eric Gartner; grandsons Ranger Shimkus Gartner and Peter Lok; and his beloved dogs Dylan and Millington.

A memorial service will be held at the VFW in Oak Harbor on Sunday, May 23, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials have been suggested to Team In Training in care of Amanda Smithers-Bentley and her Walk for Pop.
