James G. Hardwick, Sr., 63, of Oak Harbor, died Jan. 18, 2007, at Whidbey General Hospital in Coupeville. He was born in Seattle on May 26, 1943, to Dwight Gilbert and Bernice (Coleman) Hardwick. On April 18, 1960, he married Evelyn Kathleen Fletcher. After graduating from Lincoln High School in Seattle, James joined the United States Navy where he was to spend the next 22 years. He worked as an aircraft mechanic, and trained many of the technicians who served in Vietnam. He received many awards during his time of service.
After retiring from the Navy, James worked for Boeing, where he also received much recognition. He belonged to the Fleet Reserve Association and enjoyed fishing, hunting and hiking. He was a truly good person, and would give you the shirt off his back. A loving family man, James was generous and helpful, with a quick wit and good sense of humor.
He is survived by his wife of 46 years Evelyn Kathleen Hardwick of Oak Harbor; sons James G. Hardwick, Jr. of Seattle and Raymond “Tracy” Hardwick of Oak Harbor; grandchildren James G. Hardwick III and Jason Hardwick; a sister Loann Hardwick Ericks (and her husband Bob); mother-in-law Peggy Fletcher; three brothers-in-law and three sisters-in-law.
A celebration of James’ life will be held at a later date.
The family suggest memorial contributions may be made in his name to St. Jude’s Childrens Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
Arrangements are entrusted to Burley Funeral Chapel in Oak Harbor.
