Lois Irene Matson Perrins

Lois Irene Matson Perrins completed her earthly mission on Jan. 19, 2007, in St. George, Utah. Irene was born May 13, 1928, to N. LeRoy Matson and Gertrude J. Bullinger Matson, who preceded her in death.

She attended schools in Melba, Idaho and graduated from Brigham Young University in 1950, after which she did secretarial work in Chicago and in Seattle. She was teaching high school English in Washington State when she met K L. Perrins in Seattle and they were married in the Logan, Utah, Temple in 1954. Soon thereafter K was drafted into the Army and stationed in Germany, where she joined him for 18 months and where she was hired by the Army to help her husband operate the AYA (American Youth Activities) on the base in Goeppingen.

They returned to Seattle where Irene worked for Boeing Airplane Company while her husband attended pharmacy school, after which they moved to Olympia where they raised their two children. Irene did substitute teaching, partnered in running a large preschool and held a variety of secretarial positions part-time, including a stint with the Washington State Legislature.

When her husband’s employment as a pharmacist transferred him to Oak Harbor, she taught English classes to Navy personnel stationed at the Whidbey Island Naval Air Station and sold real estate part-time.

In 1987 K and Irene moved to St. George, Utah, where they owned and operated the Clinical Pharmacy until K’s health forced him to retire in 1993.

Irene was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints all her life, holding many teaching and leadership positions in ward and stake auxiliaries.

Irene is survived by her husband K L.; son, Daniel K. of North Bend; daughter, Pamela Sue of Downers Grove, Ill.; brothers, Roy J. Matson of Boise, Idaho, and Gilbert L. Matson of Valley Center, Calif.; and sister, Nadine (Bert) Brattin of Boise.
