Harold Lloyd Cheney

Harold Lloyd Cheney, 87, died Feb. 22, 2011, at his home. He was born in Lusk, Wyo., on April 5, 1923, to Lloyd and Lillian (Leeling) Cheney. Harold left school on Sept. 16, 1940 and enlisted in the U.S. Army. Following boot camp, he was sent to Iran where he served as a warehouseman for three years. He was discharged as a sergeant on July 15, 1945.

Harold returned to Lusk and on Sept. 15, 1945, he was married to Jean LaFawn Carpenter. Lloyd Cheney had been hired to work on the construction of Whidbey Island Naval Air Station, and Jean and Harold soon followed them to Oak Harbor. Harold found work as a laborer at the base and the Cheneys began to raise their family.

Harold left the base and began work at Hayward Auto as an auto body mechanic. He later moved on the Chevrolet garage, continuing his work as an auto body repairman. He finished his career at Trico Plumbing and Heating. Harold was a great outdoors- man, with a love of hunting, fishing, archery, camping and reading. He also enjoyed collecting arrowheads.

Harold is survived by his wife of 65 years, Jean, at the family home; and by four children and their spouses, Sheryl and Rod Kammenga of Bellingham, Mickey and Gene Sieffert of Oak Harbor, Harold “Dale” Cheney of Twisp, and Karen and Jack McLarkey of Camden, Ark.; eight grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. His parents, three sisters and one brother preceded him in death.

Harold requested no formal funeral services be conducted. Cremation was held with burial to follow at Maple Leaf Cemetery. Friends and family are encouraged to share memories and condolences at www.wallinfuneralhome.com. Arrangements are entrusted to Wallin Funeral Home, Oak Harbor.
