Dorothy Helen Cordero

Dorothy Helen Cordero of Oak Harbor passed into the open loving arms of our Lord Jesus Christ on July 31, 2010, at the age of 70.

Born Aug. 22, 1939, in Santa Barbara, Calif., to Walter Cordero and Helen Reyes, she was raised by Walter and her stepmother Ida Perry Cordero. She was the sister of USAF Major William E. Cordero who preceded her in death in Vietnam 1965.

Her 50-year career in nursing took her from St. Francis Hospital in Santa Barbara to Island Home Nursing in Oak Harbor. Her passions were her family, friends and all God’s nature had to offer. She was an amazing woman who, during her eight-year battle with cancer, found incredible strength in her God-given ability to render care and comfort to others in their time of need. Especially rewarding to her was her volunteer work both at Help House of Oak Harbor and as a member of the visitation ministry through the Lutheran church. Dorothy’s gift of light and laughter to all who met her will be greatly missed.

Her family wishes to express their deep gratitude to her dear friends Jerry and Caroline Gravo of Oak Harbor and to Pastor Jay Decker of the Oak Harbor Lutheran Church, as well as the community of Oak Harbor.

Dorothy is survived by her half brother Richard Diaz of Lompoc Calif.; her sons Michael, William, and Edward Pommerening; eight grandchildren, Melissa, Jason, Matthew, Joshua, Brittany, Jacob, Nicole and Katherine Pommerening; three great-grandchildren, Alaina, Joseph and Madeline; her cousin Roberta Cordero; nephews William, Anthony and James Cordero; and niece Theresa Cordero-Ghio.
