Antone William Westerdyk

Following a three-month battle with pancreatic cancer, Antone William Westerdyk died at the family home in Crescent Harbor on March 8, 2007 with his family at his bedside. At Antone’s request, no services will be held.

Antone (Tone) was born Sept. 26, 1943 in Oak Harbor to Glenn B. and Dorothy Muller Westerdyk. The family farmed for several years in Edison before returning to Crescent Harbor in 1949 to manage the family farm. Tony’s youth was spent on the farm working alongside his parents and sister, Mary K., tending the milk cows, hauling hay, and maintaining the large vegetable garden. Every summer the family traveled to Eastern Washington for tomatoes, peaches and other fresh fruit his mother canned for winter use.

Tony graduated from Oak Harbor High School in 1961 and attended Skagit Valley College in Mount Vernon. During high school and college, he worked at the Thriftway and Payless grocery stores. Later he worked in construction while still participating in the family custom haying and cattle-hauling business. In the late 1960s he established Tony’s Automotive Repair Service. After his father’s death in 1986, he and his mother, Dorothy, continued to operate Westerdyk Livestock Hauling, and Tony began to work full-time in the cattle and custom haying business. It was the love of his life, second only to his family.

Tony is survived by his wife, Cheryl D. Westerdyk; step-daughter, Samantha L. Daniels; granddaughters, Peyton and Rhygan McMurdo; and sister, Mark Ky. Westerdyk, all of Oak Harbor. He was preceded in death by his parents, Glenn B. and Dorothy W. Westerdyk.

Remembrances may be made to Home Health Care and Hospice of Whidbey Island or WAIF. Burial will be in the family plot at Maple Leaf Cemetery.
