Whidbey roads claim a dozen

Last year, 12 people died in accidents on the highway, roads and streets of Whidbey Island. Here’s a look at the tragic toll:

• On Jan. 11, 2006, 59-year-old Clinton resident John Smith, the driver, was killed in a crash on South Whidbey. The State Patrol reported that it was an alcohol-related accident and Smith was not wearing a seat belt.

• On Feb. 4, 17-year-old Oak Harbor resident Seldon Hazelo died in an accident on Highway 20 near Monkey Hill Road. He was wearing a seat belt. The State Patrol reported that it was an impaired-driving accident.

• On Feb. 24, 29-year-old Oak Harbor resident Molly Rice was killed in a one-car, high-speed accident on Reservation Road. She was the passenger and she wasn’t wearing a seat belt. The driver was convicted of vehicular homicide for reckless driving, but alcohol was not involved.

• On March 13, two South Whidbey teenagers were killed in a high-speed, impaired-driving accident in Langley. The 18-year-old driver, Jayson Jelinek, was wearing a seat belt, while 17-year-old Kelly Frantz was not, the State Patrol reported.

• On March 28, a 20-year-old Oak Harbor resident, Jamie Fealey, was killed in an accident on North Whidbey after her car went off the road. The State Patrol reported it was not alcohol-related and she was wearing a seat belt. The cause is unclear.

• On March 30, 33-year-old Ryan Howard of Greenbank was killed in a collision on Bush Point Road. The State Patrol reported that it was an alcohol-related accident and Howard was not wearing a seat belt.

• On July 13, 90-year-old Oak Harbor resident Glenn Bohman died in an accident on Highway 20 in Oak Harbor. The accident did not involve alcohol and he was wearing a seat belt.

• On July 31, 49-year-old Oak Harbor resident Scott Cline died in an accident on Bush Point Road. Alcohol was not a factor in the accident, but Cline wasn’t wearing a seat belt.

• On Oct. 20, 62-year-old Oak Harbor resident Rodney Popken was killed in a crash on Highway 20 south of Oak Harbor. He was wearing a seat belt. Alcohol was not a factor in the accident.

• On Nov. 5, 38-year-old Seattle resident Roberta Greenfield died in an alcohol-related accident on South Whidbey. She was not wearing a seat belt.

• On Nov. 19, 26-year-old Bellingham resident Bryn Boyd died in an accident on Jones Road. She was not wearing a seat belt. The State Patrol reported that alcohol was the cause of the accident. Troopers arrested the 32-year-old driver on suspicion of vehicle homicide. Police say that another passenger, a 27-year-old Ohio man, is still on life support and may not survive.
