Alice Overway

On Friday, July 25, Alice Overway, age 95, slipped quietly and peacefully away.

She was born on Feb. 22, 1919, in Bellingham, Wash., to George and Madeline Rodgers.

Alice graduated from Oak Harbor High School in 1937.

On Dec. 8, 1939, she married the love of her life, Gerald Overway.

Gerald and Alice farmed in Clover Valley, Oak Harbor, until 1942 when the U.S. Navy bought their farm.

Settling in the Skagit Valley, Alice gave birth to three children, Bill, John and Dulcie.

Alice was always involved in her children’s lives, even when it was out in the strawberry and bulb fields. Alice was a field boss for many years for Washington Bulb Co.

She was also very active in the LaConner schools, where her children attended school.

Some of her fondest memories are of the children she taught Sunday School to at the LaConner Methodist Church.

Alice and Gerald moved into Logan Creek Retirement when Gerald’s health began to decline.

Alice will be remembered for her kindness to others, her helping way and her cheerful attire. She will mostly be remembered for her love of growing beautiful flowers.

Alice was preceded in death by her husband, Gerald; her parents; brother and sister-in-law Ed and Jo Rodgers; brothers and sisters-in-law Henry and Marie Overway, Elmer and Virginia Overway and Jack Overway; and granddaughter Kari Ploeg.

She is survived by her children, Bill (Roni) Overway of Homer, Alaska; John Overway of LaConner; and Dulcie (Jerry) Thomas of Mount Vernon, Wash; and multiple grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.

The family would like to thank the owners and staff of Logan Creek for their kindness and the residents of Logan Creek for their friendship and love.

A special thank you to her CNA Cheryl Byington for her friendship and helpfulness.

Thank you, Mom, for your guidance and never-ending love.

At Alice’s request, there will be no services.

Arrangements are under the care of Hawthorne Funeral Home, Mount Vernon, Wash.
