Oak Harbor senior and soon-to-be graduate Samuel Wolfe is getting ready to leave island life behind and head to Eastern Washington University where he’ll study film production and creative writing. Luckily, before the move, Wolfe decided to share some movie reviews, critiques and quips with his hometown audience and started a blog for the Whidbey News-Times called “The ReelScope.”

“I wanted to blog on the News-Times because I love to talk, discuss and debate about movies with my friends,” Wolfe said. “Writing provides an outlet for my viewpoints, and it also helps expand my writing skills. I hope people will just have fun reading the blog. It’s not meant to be super serious or anything. Basically, I just want readers to hear what I have to say and get some good advice in the process.”

Wolfe writes his reviews based on a traditional A through F grading system and also includes interactive polls on his page. He said he hopes to be seen as a trusted, down-to-earth source for people who are debating what flick to catch at the theater or which DVD to score from Netflix.

This month, Wolfe plans to release an original short film about the Blue Fox Drive-In on The ReelScope blog that features interviews with the theater’s owners and fans.

In high school, Wolfe played varsity football for three years, varsity baseball for four and served as the captain for both teams his senior year. He was the student body vice president during his freshman and sophomore years and became actively involved in the National Honor Society as a senior. Outside of school, Wolfe holds a job at Big 5 Sporting Goods and enjoys spending time with his family.

It was in his junior year that Wolfe decided to pursue work in film.

“Admittedly, I would enjoy browsing essays and reviews by Roger Ebert or reading film scripts online rather than work on science or math,” he said. “Since middle school, I started making movies, which were always a bunch of fun. So, I finally figured I should make a career out of something I love.”

After college, Wolfe hopes to get a job or a paid internship at a production company doing editing or sound work. His ultimate goal is to sell a story and get a directing job.

“No matter what, I just want to make sure what I’m doing makes me happy and hopefully makes a difference in someone else’s life,” he said.

Wolfe’s blog can be found on the Whidbey News-Times website under the Blogs tab. His favorite movies include those done by Christopher Nolan, like “Inception,” but he also likes directors Steven Spielberg and the Coen brothers.
