Wright, Hoffmire dominate mayoral race in primary election

Two of the four candidates for Oak Harbor mayor dominated the primary election Tuesday, but it appears that it might be a tight race come the general election.

The primary election also pared candidates from two Oak Harbor city council races and an Oak Harbor school board contest.

The first count of ballots in the primary election showed that Ronnie Wright and Shane Hoffmire were the clear winners. Wright received 1,137 votes, or nearly 46%, while Hoffmire was close behind with 1,067 ballots cast in his favor, or 43%.

Both men will move on to the Nov. 7 general election.

Mayoral candidates Nick Green and Craig Nurvic were knocked out of the race. Green received 153 votes, or about 6%, and Nurvic got 120 votes, which is nearly 5%.

In the race for Oak Harbor council, Position 2, Chris Wiegenstein received 890 votes, or 37%, and Andy Plumlee has 830 votes, or about 35%. It appears that Pat Harman, who received 28% of the vote, will not move forward.

In the race for Oak Harbor council, Position 4, Barbara Armes was ahead with 966 votes, or about 40%, and John Chaszar has 796 ballots cast in his favor, or about 33%. Wismine D’Avilar announced a couple of weeks ago that she no longer was seeking the position, but she still received 643 votes, which is about 27%.

In the sole Oak Harbor school board race on the primary, Sharon Jensen was ahead with 1,996 votes, or nearly 42%. Will Smith received 1,505 votes, or 31%. It appears that Aisha Mayfield may not go on to the general election; she received 1,303 votes, or 27%.

The Island County Elections Office reports that 7,848 ballots were counted so far. The office estimates that 650 ballots are left to count.
