A 22-year-old California resident is going to jail for her part in an assault outside of an Oak Harbor nightspot last October.

Megan Byelick of El Cajon pleaded guilty in Island County Superior Court Jan. 20 to second-degree assault as part of a plea bargain.

In exchange, prosecutors will not file charges against Byelick in a possible extortion case, court documents state.

Island County Superior Court Judge Vickie Churchill agreed with the joint sentencing recommendation and sent Byelick to jail for six months. The judge ordered her to pay $1,270 in fines and fees, as well as restitution that will be determined at a later date.

In addition, Churchill authorized a harassment no-contact order barring Byelick from communication with the victim. Byelick also has to write a letter of apology to a woman named in court documents.

The assault occurred in the early morning hours outside of the Bayside Lounge.

The victim, a 21-year-old woman, and Byelick did not know each other prior to the incident, which may have been a case of mistaken identity. Byelick walked up to the woman and punched her in the eye, temporarily blinding her, court documents state.

The assault sparked a melee involving Byelick, her friend, the victim and the victim’s boyfriend, according to

the police report.

The victim went to the hospital and doctors closed a gash on her head with four staples. The vision in her eye started clearing up later in the day, but she had to see a specialist for the injury.

“Her eye looked as if the cornea had separated from the eyeball,” the officer wrote.
