The Coupeville High School tennis team made a successful debut in the Olympic League by blowing by visiting Klahowya 6-1 Thursday, March 26.

The win was spurred by a sweep of the singles matches: 1, Jacki Ginnings won 6-2, 6-1; 2, Valen Trujillo won 6-1, 6-1; and 3, Ana Luvera won by default.

“Jacki was in control the entire way, giving up few games despite playing extremely long points,” coach Ken Stange said. “Jacki has the ability to outlast an opponent. Today, she did just that. Jacki didn’t win with flash; she won with grit and determination.”

Trujillo used “power, placement and conditioning” to trounce her opponent, Stange said, and her efforts earned her Player of the Match honors.

The Wolves tacked on three wins in the doubles matches: 2, Payton Aparicio/McKenzie Bailey won 6-2, 6-2; 3, Ivy Luvera/Micky LeVine won 6-4, 6-1; and 4, Wynter Thorne/Jazmine Franklin won 6-1, 6-0.

Aparicio and Bailey got off to a slow start, according to Stange, but used “power and consistency” to take control.

Ivy Luvera and LeVine were down 3-0 and then won 11 of the next 13 games to collect the match.

“Once they figured out how to deal with a pair of erratic opponents, they put it on cruise control,” Stange said.

Franklin, playing her first varsity match, teamed with veteran Thorne for the easy win in fourth doubles.

Both “played very well,” Stange said.

Coupeville’s lone loss came in first doubles where Sage Renninger and Sydney Autio fell 7-5, 6-2.

Although the duo lost, Stange said the pair “played a fantastic match.”

The Wolves also won all three JV doubles matches: Bree Daigneault/Haleigh Deasy won 9-7; Ashley Smith/Hanna Seiffert won 8-5; and Maggie Crimmins/Kameryn St. Onge won 8-1.

Coupeville (1-1) goes to Granite Falls (1-0) at 3:30 p.m. Friday, March 27, for a nonleague match.
