Coupeville produced 12 champions at the sub-district track meet Saturday, May 14, at Bremerton High School.

The Wolves also tied for first in the competitive race for the girls team title, while the Coupeville boys placed second in the four-school meet.

The Klahowya and Coupeville girls each earned  77 points, one point more than Port Townsend. Chimacum trailed with 24.

In the boys team standings, Klahowya scored 82 points, edging Coupeville at 78. Port Townsend finished with 65 and Chimacum 38.

Klahowya, a school much bigger in enrollment than Coupeville, used its depth to compete with the Wolves’ strength. Coupeville won 12 events (seven in the girls meet and five in the boys) to six wins for the Eagles (three each).

Makana Stone paced the Coupeville girls by adding several more honors to her ever-growing list of athletic accomplishments. She finished first in the 400 (1:00.34) and 800 (2:31.03) and in both relays with Lauren Grove, Lindsey Roberts and Sylvia Hurlburt (4×100, 51.25; 4×200, 1:47.39).

Dalton Martin led the Coupeville boys with wins in the discus (161-07) and shot put (46-09.5) and a second-place finish in the javelin (135-11).

Other winners for the girls were Hurlburt (200, 27.5), Skyler Lawrence (shot, 31-05) and Roberts (long jump, 15-01.75).

Joining Martin in the winners’ circle on the boys side were Danny Conlisk (800, 2:15.86), Jordan Ford (pole vault, 12) and Mitchell Carroll (triple jump, 39-08).

The top three finishers in each event qualified for next week’s district meet. The fourth-place finishers will be compared to the fifth-place marks from the Nisqually League meet, and the best will also earn district berths.

The district meet is Friday and Saturday, May 20 and 21, in Bremerton.
