Spurred by a big comeback in the first game, Friday Harbor blanked the visiting Coupeville High School volleyball team 3-0 Thursday, Sept. 10.

The Wolverines were down 18-9 in the first set but rallied to win 28-26. They claimed the next two games 25-7, 25-13.

Coupeville coach Breanne Smedley said her team “played really well in the first game,” but surrendering the lead in the opening set caused them to “get a little deflated.”

That letdown carried over into the following sets.

“We are working on our mental toughness,” Smedley said. “We need to start playing to win instead of playing not to lose.”

Coupeville did put together some “great plays,” Smedley said, citing some solid blocks on Friday Harbor’s taller hitters.

Katrina McGranahan finished with three blocks, and Emma Smith had two. Valen Trujillo chipped in with 12 digs.

Lauren Rose led the offense with three aces.

“We are a young team going through some ups and downs,” Smedley added.

Coupeville (0-2) heads to Langley to play in the South Whidbey Invitational at 9 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 12, and then goes to Mount Vernon Christian (1-0) Tuesday, Sept. 15, at 6:45 p.m.
