The Oak Harbor High School girls basketball team won’t be shy about shooting, according to first-year coach Jon Atkins.

“We have a lot of great shooters,” Atkins said. “We hope to lead the league in three-pointers made.”

At the front of the three-point parade will be three-year starter Annie Leete, a second-team, all-Wesco choice last year, and an experienced point guard, senior Natalie Fiallos, who can get her the ball.

“We are also a very fast team and will use that to our advantage to create havoc on defense and pushing the ball on offense,”  Atkins said.

Seven letter winners return, but Atkins sees lack of experience as one of his team’s weaknesses.

“We just need to play more basketball,” he said. “We don’t have a ton of experience at the varsity level; it will take some time to adjust to the speed of the game at that level for some of the girls.”

Along with 5-7 Leete and 4-10 Fiallos, letter winners include 5-9 senior post Liz Lym, 5-10 junior post Hailey Lundstrom, 5-6 sophomore guard Jinai Guzman, 5-8 sophomore guard Deja Bunch and 5-8 sophomore guard AnnaBelle Whitefoot.

Others who should contribute, according to Atkins, are four juniors: 5-9 post Brook Peplinski, 5-8 guard Kenna Prosch, 5-2 guard Jamie Estrella and 5-10 post Sierra Southwick.

Atkins said he expects his players to “learn how to play tough all the time” and “continue to grow and learn how to play and practice at a championship level.”

The Wesco North is loaded this year, Atkins said. Last year’s division champion Stanwood and district champion Everett return a bundle of talented players, and both of the Marysville schools return most of their starters.

Oak Harbor, 3-11 and 6-14 last winter, starts the season on the road at Anacortes at 7:15 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 3. The Wildcats host Mount Baker at 7:15 p.m. Friday, Dec. 6.
