Whidbey will be swingin’ for a cause next month.

The SeaNotes, a longtime big band on the island, will play a benefit concert March 5 to raise money for victims of the recent 7.0-magnitude earthquake in Haiti. They’ll play a mixture of danceable tunes, including swing, latin and ballroom, among other popular styles.

The 18-member band contains a French horn, drums, bass, piano, three trombones, four trumpets, five saxophones, and several vocalists.

At a recent SeaNotes rehearsal, Kathy Selveit — honorary member, default “PR” chair, and wife of the director — said the band hopes to draw a sizeable crowd and raise plenty of dough for the cause.

Proceeds will go toward the locally based Islands Chapter of the American Red Cross, she said.

Despite the mature music selection, the SeaNotes hope to attract a mixture of ages to the Oak Harbor venue.

“We’re trying to pull the younger crowd in,” Selveit said.

There’s no set attire, she said, but the duds at past dances ranged from blue jeans to elegant evening wear.

Tickets will cost $15 apiece, or $25 per couple, which is a little spendier than normal event tickets. The band increased the price in hopes of collecting more money to donate to Haiti. The dance will take place at the Oak Harbor Elks Lodge, 155 Northeast Ernst St. from 7:30 to 10:30 p.m.

Director Bruce Selveit said the SeaNotes normally break even on an average night, but it’s worth it.

“We do it for the love of it,” he said.
