Local athletes sparkled this past weekend.

Cross Country

Coupeville’s Tyler King led wire-to-wire to win the state 1A boys cross country race at Sun Willow Golf Course in Pasco Saturday. His personal best time of 15:16.9 in the 5K race was 30 seconds faster than the 1A runner up and the third fastest overall regardless of classification at the state meet.

The Oak Harbor girls team finished third in the 3A team standings, the best performance ever for a Wildcat team. Glacier Peak (41 points) took the title, followed by Shadle Park (102) and Oak Harbor (118).

Christina Wicker placed 25th (19:34.4), Allison Duvenez 27th (19:35.8), Adrianna Royal 30th (19:38), Hannah Bressler 35th (19:46.5) and Abby Leete 39th (19:54.5). Taylor VonGrey (80th, 20:40.9) and Alex Laiblin (20:44.2) also competed in the meet with 137 runners.

The Oak Harbor boys placed 16th (381) in the meet won by Spokane’s North Central (43).

Matt Reith finished 19th (16:14), John Kaltenbach 87th (17:21), Joshua Schrum 110th (17:45), Michael Kincy 126th (18:13), Caley Powers 128th (18:18), Nathan Miller 134th (18:30) and Wyatt Homola 135th (18:30).

Volleyball

Oak Harbor came through the losers’ bracket to win two matches Saturday at Glacier Peak High School and finish third in the 3A Northwest District tournament and claim its first state tournament berth since 1991.

Swimming

Five Oak Harbor individuals and two relays have qualified for the state 3A swim meet, and Coupeville’s Rachel Weinstein has qualified for the state 2A meet.

At the 3A district meet Friday and Saturday, Ciara Hu (200 individual medley, 2:12.05; 100 butterfly, 59.7), Akasha Trisler (200 IM, 2:17.03; 100 breaststroke, 1:09.5), Karina Concepcion (100 backstroke, 1:02.24), Therese Desquitado (100 backstroke, 1:04.54) and Tori Nickerson (100 breaststroke, 1:12.91) qualified for the state meet by either placing in the top three at district or meeting a state qualifying mark.

Concepcion, Hu, Trisler and Nickerson also have qualified in the 200 medley and 200 free relays.

Hu qualified by time earlier this year in the 100 and 500 free, and Trisler in the 100 backstroke.

Weinstein heads to the 2A state meet in the 200 and 500 free.

Oak Harbor finished tied for second with Glacier Peak (222) behind Shorewood (302) in the district team standings.

Football

Coupeville (2-8) closed out its season with a nonleague 27-14 win over Life Christian (4-6) at Curtis High School Saturday, Nov. 6.

Ian Smith passed for three touchdowns and ran for a fourth in the Wolves’ win.
