The second annual Central Whidbey Hearts & Hammers Workday is fast approaching.

On Saturday, May 1, volunteers will gather in the multipurpose room at the Coupeville Elementary School at 7:45 a.m. for breakfast before beginning a busy day repairing owner-occupied homes for Central Whidbey families who are physically or financially unable to do the work themselves.

John Schisel, publicity manager, said 14 homeowners will receive assistance this year. While priority is given to health and safety problems, Workday activities will include carpentry, plumbing, electrical work, painting, plastering, weatherization, heavy cleaning, roofing, yard cleanup and trash removal.

There is no charge to the homeowners for labor or materials. Costs are covered by grants and donations from foundations, corporations, service organizations, churches, individuals, fundraising events and in-kind donations of labor and materials.

“Since its formation in 2009, Central Whidbey Hearts & Hammers has received outstanding support from the community,” Schisel said. Several businesses and community groups, including South Whidbey Hearts & Hammers, the Windermere Foundation, Soroptimists, Penn Cove Design, Fine Line Painting NW and Whidbey Island Internal Medicine, and many individuals have made generous contributions to the new “neighbors helping neighbors” program.

The Central Whidbey Hearts & Hammers recently received a sizable grant from the Coupeville Festival Association. And in February, the Shifty Sailors and their sponsors presented the organization with a check representing the entire proceeds from two “Shifty” concerts held at Greenbank Farm.

Central Whidbey Hearts & Hammers is seeking volunteers as well as tax-deductible financial and material contributions.
