Editor,

I’m one of the volunteer docents who guides people through a very popular tourist destination at Fort Casey State Park — the Admiralty Head Lighthouse.

Since April 2014, I’ve had the pleasure of giving tours to hundreds of people from all over the United States and the world.

In the process, I’ve learned more about Admiralty Head, Whidbey Island and Washington state than I thought I ever could.

While I never dreamed I could do it, I’ve had more fun than I should be legally allowed to have.

Admiralty Head Lighthouse is in dire need of volunteers for the upcoming tourist season. We open on Saturday, March 5 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. for weekends during March.

We can use all the help that we can get. Don’t think that you don’t know enough to do the job. Part of the fun is learning as you go and passing on knowledge to the people that come for the tour.

An example of something I learned — The fictional characters, Ma & Pa Kettle of movie fame, came from a book called The Egg & I, which was based on a true story that took place in Chimacum, south of Port Townsend, in the early 20th century.

For more information about being a volunteer, email to Sharon Sharpe, Admiralty Head Lighthouse Program Specialist, at Sharon.Sharpe@parks.wa.gov or call her at the Park Ranger office, 360-678-1186.

Here’s hoping that I get to see you working there this summer.
